If you have lost your cat or dog contact your local council and local state or territory RSPCA.

In some instances RSPCA shelters act as the local pound, under contract to the local council. Alternatively, some RSPCAs may temporarily hold lost pets for collection by the council. The role of RSPCA shelters differs in each state and territory.

Most RSPCA shelters will have a lost and found register. If this facility is available it is important to register your pet's details and your personal contact details with them.

Also contact local veterinary surgeries, other animal welfare organisations and the police. Check your local telephone directory to see what animal rescue and protection organisations are in the area. These will differ in each state and territory and your local RSPCA may be able to give you a list of contact names and numbers.

Ask your friends and neighbours to keep a look out, and put up posters in the area with a picture of your pet. Leave a notice with your local newsagents and shops and businesses in the area. Contact your local newspapers and radio stations - they may make an announcement about your search.

The task of reuniting pets with their owners is always made easier if the pet has proper identification. All pet owners should ensure that their pet is microchipped, properly tagged and registered with their local council.
