The RSPCA Approved Farming Scheme aims to improve the lives of as many farm animals as possible in an environment that meets their behavioural needs.

The RSPCA believes good animal welfare is more than providing animals with access to the outdoors or being called ‘free range’.  This is why the Approved Farming Scheme has the most comprehensive animal welfare standards, the most robust on-farm assessment program and allows pigs to be raised indoors, outdoors or in a combination of the two.

In contrast to conventional pig farming systems, sows on RSPCA Approved farms are not confined to stalls or farrowing crates, growing pigs have straw to sleep and play in, and there is no surgical castration, teeth clipping or tail docking of piglets.
