INDUSTRY ADMITS LIVE EXPORT FAILURE

The live export industry has admitted that Australian animals will continue to suffer while ever they are exported to the Middle East for slaughter.

The 730 Report tonight exposed the brutal treatment of Australian sheep during last month's Festival of Sacrifice.

The RSPCA said Australian farmers were being misled about what actually happens to their animals in the Middle East and the industry's suggestion they should accept some level of cruelty during 'peak periods' is outrageous.

"Time and again sheep producers are assured by the Australian Government and by the live export industry that their animals are well cared for overseas," said RSPCA Australia CEO Heather Neil.

"This latest evidence shows sheep trussed and packed into car boots; terrified animals bound with wire and dragged by their feet; and animals slaughtered in front of each other on the streets while others wait in line.

"This cruel handling and slaughter would be illegal in Australia but for some reason we accept this treatment for our animals overseas. And now it seems we should accept this treatment during 'peak periods'.

"Australian sheep farmers would be mortified to think these could be their animals. This footage represents a betrayal of their trust and sheep producers, who we know care about the livestock they raise, would be well justified in demanding answers."

The Australian Government banned live sheep exports to Egypt after similar treatment of Australian animals was revealed in that country. The RSPCA calls on the Government to show some consistency and end the live sheep trade to the rest of the Middle East as well.
