Let MPs vote with their conscience on live export

RSPCA Australia today called on the Prime Minister to put historic legislation on the phase out live exports to a conscience vote.

“For the first time our political representatives will have the opportunity to end one of the cruellest trades in Australian history. The only way they will get the freedom to have an honest and unfettered debate on this legislation is if it is put to a conscience vote,” said RSPCA CEO Heather Neil.

"This legislation calls for a transition away from all live exports over the next three years, giving producers time to adjust and find new markets.

"Importantly, it puts in place safeguards to ensure the protection of  Australian animals that continue to be exported during this phase out period, whether it's to Asia or the Middle East.

"Legislating these safeguards is critical in not only ensuring protection for Australian animals in importing countries but because enshrining welfare standards in law is the only way producers can have certainty in this market.

"Combined sheep and beef meat exports are already worth $5 billion more than the live trade. The Middle East is now our biggest market for prime lamb and mutton with sheep meat exports worth $110 million more than live sheep exports last year.

"This shouldn't have to be a conscience vote because phasing out live exports is clearly in the best long-term interests of farmers, jobs, the economy and of course animals.

“However, a conscience vote is the only mechanism that will allow MPs to vote in line with their beliefs and the wishes of their constituents who overwhelmingly want this trade to end.”
