Pet food standards

A number of recent pet food safety issues raised concerns and highlighted the need for improvements in pet food safety and quality. The draft Australian Standard – Manufacturing and marketing of pet food was developed in response to these concerns.

Although an Australian Standard is not law, it will set the standard for safety and quality of pet food sold in Australia.

Thank you to members of the public who provided comments on the draft standard during the public consultation. RSPCA Australia has provided a final submission on the draft and will continue to be directly involved in the process as a member of the Pet Food Standard working group.

RSPCA Australia also works to improve pet food safety as a member of a separate pet food working group - the PIMC (Primary Industries Ministerial Council) Pet Food Controls Working Group.
