Animal testing in other areas

In addition to cosmetics testing on animals, $3 billion is spent annually worldwide on animal tests to ensure the safety of consumer products. In Australia, while our scientists may not be testing cosmetic ingredients on animals, between 4 and 5 million animals are used for scientific and educational purposes each year. Despite this astounding number there is currently no dedicated government funding for developing alternatives to animals.

Australia urgently needs a national, coordinated approach to reduce animal use and to investigate, develop and validate alternatives to animals in research and testing.

The RSPCA has been asking the government to develop a national strategy for alternatives and the establishment of a national centre to implement the three 'R's (the principles of refinement, reduction and replacement in animal-based research).
