Position title:   Digital Communications Officer


RSPCA Australia is recognised as a leader in online communications and digital strategy within the not-for-profit sector. We are seeking an experienced, creative and highly motivated person to join the communications team, based in the federal office in Canberra.


The Digital Communications Coordinator will develop and implement strategies to promote the policies, campaigns and views of the RSPCA online. They will be able to recognise, analyse and seize opportunities to drive change using our online platform/s, within a busy communications and campaigns environment.



This position presents an exciting opportunity to work in a prominent role for a leading Australian not for profit. You will be responsible for ensuring RSPCA’s online resources support the organisation’s strategic and operational objectives. You will be a digital communications professional with a passion for online advocacy and campaigns. You will enjoy working in a busy communications environment, have a service/customer focus and be highly skilled in web design, development and working with data.

The key to this role is that it spans both technical and professional communication/campaign skills.

The ideal candidate will manage projects and prioritise their time in a busy work environment, using your communication skills to enhance teamwork and achieve results, and with a strong commitment to learning and proven ability to quickly acquire new skills.



Actively manage and regularly refresh RSPCA websites (including Confluence) to ensure the RSPCA’s online presence is informative, accurate, compelling and supports current priorities and activities (currently x websites).

Working closely with other members of the communications team, implement a major refresh of the main RSPCA Australia website in line with the project brief.

Track, measure and report upon analytics and the performance of all RSPCA websites plus online campaigns and activities (including social media), providing timely and well-informed recommendations for changes to achieve communication objectives.

Work with stakeholders to identify, develop and implement online initiatives to engage the community and activate supporters to donate and/or take action on animal welfare issues.

Provide a level of IT and technical support advice* to a small RSPCA office team, including responding to technical concerns.

*note this is not a technical support role - we have an external provider in place for that responsibility.


Technical Skills

Administer websites using Drupal/WordPress content management systems, creating responsive web content in HTML/CSS and regularly reviewing and reporting on results to ensure continuous improvement.

Maintain RSPCA user accounts across a range of online platforms.

Undertake basic server administration, including managing filesystems and MySQL databases via WHM/cPanel.

Import, export and work with data in Excel, and in accordance with all applicable privacy and security requirements.

Compose and process email campaigns for bulk distribution using email marketing platforms.

Ensure data that is captured integrates/feeds into the RSPCA Australia CRM, and support other staff to undertake new activities and improve results through optimising CRM data segmentation.



Applicants must address the following essential and desirable selection criteria, demonstrating your experience in:



Developing online content management systems, such as Drupal or WordPress;

Responsive web design and development using HTML and CSS;

Using version control tools (GitHub/Bitbucket);

Working with: webservers, databases, DNS.

Online communications, campaigning or advocacy, including producing and publishing email marketing content.

Experience in monitoring and evaluating the performance of online initiatives and recommending changes to improve achievement of objectives

Working with data and using online analytics creatively to drive change.

Managing projects and prioritising your time in a busy work environment.

Using your communication skills to enhance teamwork and achieve results.

Commitment to learning and proven ability to quickly acquire new skills.

Enthusiasm for the not-for-profit sector and animal welfare issues



Experience with developing content for social media platforms.

Some coding knowledge is desirable (Javascript at a minimum) – PHP is preferred.

Experience developing on CRM platforms, especially SugarCRM.

Experience in visual communication (Adobe suite of products).

Knowledge of web accessibility guidelines.



Workers and Volunteers are responsible for:

providing feedback on any matters which may affect WHS at RSPCA Australia.




The contract period is for 2 years. Leave provisions are 20 days recreational and 10 days sick/carers leave per year. Normal office hours are from 9am – 5.30pm Monday to Friday.
