The RSPCA applauds the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on its ruling to stop Japan’s whaling program in the Southern Ocean.

The case was brought by Australia to the ICJ in 2010 to end the hunting of whales in the Antarctic under the guise of research.

The hunting of whales has long been campaigned against by many international groups, and the immediate cessation of the Antarctic whaling program will help to protect the whale population of the Southern Ocean and prevent further hunting in the whale sanctuary.

The RSPCA has long maintained that there is no justification for hunting whales as this inevitably leads to prolonged suffering.

This is a huge victory for animal welfare and proof that the global community will not tolerate cruelty.
