With more Australians than ever before eating salmon, the RSPCA has announced it is working with Huon Aquaculture to improve the welfare of Australia's farmed salmon.
 
Huon Aquaculture is the first salmon producer to join the RSPCA Approved Farming Scheme and farm in accordance with the RSPCA’s detailed animal welfare standards that ensure better welfare for Australian-farmed Atlantic salmon.
 
RSPCA Australia CEO Heather Neil said the RSPCA Approved Farming Scheme standards and RSPCA Approved branding offers consumers assurance that animals have been farmed humanely.
 
“Salmon is a popular choice for many Australians, and millions of fish are farmed every year to meet this demand,” said Ms Neil.
 
“The welfare of farmed fish is of a growing interest to Australians, and the RSPCA is pleased Huon Aquaculture is committed to ensuring animal welfare is prioritised throughout the life of their salmon.
 
“Scientific research has found that fish are capable of suffering, feeling pain, anxiety and fear. Therefore, like all animals farmed for food, we need to make sure that farming fish is done in a humane way.
 
“Huon’s participation in the RSPCA Approved Farming Scheme will give customers looking for an animal welfare friendly salmon product a good choice. It’s a good outcome for millions of fish and consumers wanting to make a more humane choice.” said Ms Neil.
 
Through the RSPCA Approved Farming Scheme, the RSPCA works closely with farmers to make a positive impact on the lives of animals. Since the Scheme was established 22 years ago, more than 1.2 billion farm animals have been farmed to better welfare standards. With Huon’s participation in the Scheme, millions of fish will benefit every year. By looking for Huon’s RSPCA Approved salmon range, customers can be pleased that this salmon is coming from a company that is committed to fish welfare.
