An exciting opportunity exists for a Scientific Communications Officer to join the team at Australia’s most trusted animal welfare charity.

The Scientific Communication Officer plays a key role in ensuring that RSPCA’s partnerships are underpinned by robust scientific evidence and communicated with clarity, credibility, and impact. This role works closely with the Manager, RSPCA Pet Insurance to supports the development and delivery of science-based messaging, content, and advice that aligns with RSPCA’s animal welfare policies, guidelines and mission.
Collaborating with the marketing, partnerships, campaigns and communication teams to develop and support evidence-based campaign, education and communication materials.
Reviewing and approving communication materials for scientific accuracy, clarity, tone, and alignment with RSPCA policy and brand guidelines.
Providing technical clearance of content generated by other team members, as well as drafting content for clearance by other senior staff and subject matter experts.
Reviewing relevant scientific literature, policy and other materials in order to prepare evidence-based information and advice on key areas.
Assisting in sourcing and verifying appropriate imagery, video footage, and multimedia elements to complement written content.
Establishing and maintaining collaborative relationships with key stakeholders including RSPCA member Societies, providing guidance on science communication best practices and help build scientific literacy within the team.
Demonstrating or developing and maintaining highly specialised knowledge of companion animals and the animal welfare issues that affect them.
Translating highly technical or scientific research and data into engaging, understandable content for general audiences.
Form a close working relationship with the Marketing Coordinator, Pet Insurance Partnership.
We’re looking for someone who has:
Tertiary qualifications in animal science, science communication, veterinary science, or a related field.
Demonstrated experience in scientific writing and communication, ideally in a commercial or advocacy context.
Strong understanding of animal welfare science and animal behaviour and its application in commercial settings.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to tailor messaging to diverse audiences.
Ability to work collaboratively across teams and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
