Australians will again be shocked at the treatment of racing greyhounds after ABC’s 7.30 exposed the conditions and cruelty faced by hundreds of Australian greyhounds exported to Asia every year.

With the stroke of a pen, the Australian Government can end the suffering of greyhounds by stopping exports to Macau, China, Hong Kong and Vietnam. The Minister for Agriculture and Water Resources, Barnaby Joyce, has been asked to intervene by Greyhounds Australasia and yet refuses to act.

“Knowing what these dogs are facing, it is inconceivable that the Australian Government and Minister Joyce could continue to allow the exploitation of man’s best friend when the suffering can end so easily,” said RSPCA Australia CEO Heather Neil.

“As long as the Australian Government continues to approve the export of racing greyhounds, dogs will face the continued prospect of confinement in appalling conditions and the likelihood of being raced to death.

“At the Canidrome in Macau, where 700 Australian greyhounds currently reside, 20 to 30 per cent of the dogs are injured at any one time and on average 30 are killed every month. Greyhounds are also being exported to China where greyhound racing is an illegal practice.

“I have seen first-hand the conditions Australian greyhounds face at the Canidrome in Macau and it is nothing short of appalling. No animal should ever be subjected to that level of confinement or risk of injury and death.

“In order to prevent more dogs being sent overseas to suffer, the RSPCA is demanding the industry penalise all trainers who flout the rules and for Minister Joyce to take immediate action and put an end to export of racing greyhounds once and for all,” said Ms Neil.
