The RSPCA’s 2020 Clear the Shelters event has wrapped up with an incredible 3,001 animals finding new homes over the course of the three-day event.

Clear the Shelters events were held by RSPCAs in every state and territory of Australia except Tasmania from Friday 21 to Sunday 23 February.

This is the third year that the reduced-adoption-price event has been held on a national scale, with the aim of focusing media and public attention to secure loving new homes for as many animals as possible in a short timeframe.

The event particularly helps to highlight long-term animals that have been in the shelter for some time, often for no discernible reason.

Over the weekend, adoption fees may be temporarily reduced to as low as $29 for dogs and cats, smaller animals, and even horses.

All usual adoption processes apply, and the RSPCA doesn’t general see a significant increase in unsuccessful adoptions or returned animals.

The 2020 figure represents a slight increase on 2019 results, when a total of 2,654 animals found their forever homes over the course of the weekend.

This year, South Australia reported the greatest success rate with 98.5% of available animals successfully rehomed over the weekend.

New South Wales was in a close second place with 93% of available animals rehomed.

The event is made possible thanks to the support of the RSPCA national nutritional partner, Hill’s Pet Nutrition, and national adoption partners, Petbarn (a total of 334 pets were rehomed through PetBarn outlets nationally).
