RSPCA shelters around the country are dropping their prices this weekend to make pet ownership more affordable for more Australians who are ready, willing and able to bring a pet into their home.

The ‘Clear the Shelters’ campaign will be held for the first time this year across NSW, ACT, Qld, Vic, SA and the NT, and means most animals will be available for adoption for just $29 between Friday 23 to Sunday 25 February.

The campaign will also be supported by PetBarn, which will have RSPCA pets available for adoption at the lower prices form their stores in Qld, Vic, NSW and SA.

The campaign, which broke records for the number of adoptions in NSW last year, is being adopted by other RSPCA shelters, and will include many different species of animals from dogs and cats to pockets pets and even some livestock.

Normal adoption procedures apply and all animals are desexed, microchipped, and vaccinated.

“The reduced adoption fee doesn’t come near covering the costs of preparing an animal for adoption, so we can’t offer these low prices all the time – but we also don’t want money to be the only obstacle to bringing a pet into a happy and loving home,” said Ms Neil.

“Importantly, our data has shown us that the price of acquiring an animal has no influence on the long-term success of adoption and welfare outcomes,

“We want to get pets out of the shelter and into their new homes as quickly as possible, so this is a win for the animal and a win for anyone wanting to adopt a new pet - and that’s a great outcome for us,” says RSPCA Australia CEO Heather Neil.

Petbarn and The Petbarn Foundation are delighted to support the RSPCA shelters across Australia with the Clear the Shelters campaign this year, said National PetBarn Foundation Manager Ms Sam Morton.

"We are very proud to partner with our friends at RSPCA and will have adoption animals requiring forever homes, available in our participating Petbarn Adoption stores," said Ms Morton.

RSPCA shelters in all states and territories except WA and Tasmania are participating in Clear the Shelters this year.
