There are few, if any, animals on Earth whose lives remain untouched by human choices. Animals are used for food, as companions, for entertainment, as transport, and for research. Even free-living animals navigate human-generated challenges in the form of tourism, vehicles, disappearing habitats, and a changing climate. Every day, humans influence the lives of animals through their actions. The effects can be direct or indirect, beneficial or damaging, acute or long-lasting, and localised or widespread. For better or for worse, humans are the most impactful species on the planet.
The RSPCA Animal Welfare Seminar 2027 will explore how human behaviour shapes animal welfare outcomes. With experts from a range of fields, we will examine the drivers behind human actions, delve into the science of behaviour change, discuss the importance of bridging divides between people and culture, and consider how best to support individuals and communities who live and work with animals.
